Most of you who've already talked to Witnesses will know this already but this is primarily for Potgenie since witnessing (or "house-to-house" as it's called) is banned in her area (there are probably Witnesses in your area nonetheless).

"Jehovah" is the accepted English translation of the Hebrew Tetragrammaton יהוה (YHWH), God's personal name. It might be in your Bible; check Psalm 83:18 and you'll see a rendering of this translation of the divine name unless they used "Yahweh" which is also an acceptable translation.

I have to say that explanation only confused me more. But I've wiki-ed it and I think I know enough about it now!

Hm...I'd like to know more about it too. Specifically why other denominations seem to regard them as heretical (I mean, I'd ask my dad, but that wouldn't exactly give me a very clear picture).

Next I think it's good to think how our beliefs are different from, say, the Catholics. One thing we differ in is that we Witnesses do not believe in an immortal soul. The body is the soul and when the body dies so does the person's consciousness.

Hmm. Makes sense.

I don't know...I'd think I'd want something of myself existing after I die (be it the soul or whatever you want to call it)...

Personally I believe in past lives and reincarnation, but that's just me.

How long have you been a Witness?

I've been a Witness for as long as I could remember. My mom became a Witness before I was born and raised me as one.

Here's something you guys might find confusing. When resurrected, one either becomes part of the heavenly co-heirs of Jesus (The 144000) or part of the innumerable "other sheep" that they rule over here on earth.

Basically if you get resurrected you either get into Heaven or get resurrected here on Earth.

Come Easter season for you guys, we Witnesses hold a celebration of Christ's death we call the Memorial. There, when the unleavened bread and the cup of wine are served, only the ones with the hope of life in heaven are allowed to drink and eat.

They say that if you get a really intense desire to participate in eating the bread and drinking the wine (I don't know how to explain it exactly) that means you're part of the heavenly. Otherwise, like me, you get a promise of life on Earth instead.
