| I want to be a translator, actually. I like writing and English is one of my best subjects, and for a while I wanted a career in music because I love being in band so much, but I realized that I have an aptitude for foreign languages, and I guess that's when I made up my mind. I'll probably write fanfictions for the rest of my life, though. They're just fun~ (I'm a total dork. XD) | |

And being a translator sounds like a cool job! I wouldn't mind being one, too! (I heard it pays really well. Ha ha.)

| Not that I know of... at least, not in America. I don't know about Canada. But you need to know the other language(s) to the point of fluency that you're almost as good as a native speaker. | |

| It depends on the field you want to go into. Like, Canadian government, you only need French & English as a mandatory set, but more is preferred. | |

| Translators who are expertly fluent in only one language rarely get hired. Most agencies hire those who know five or more languages strictly because they aren't going to pay a one trick pony when they can have one person do the work of five.
And you must be as fluent as a native speaker in reading, writing, and speech.

| Yeah, that's what I thought... *sigh* I'd better get to work, then~ I'm only partially fluent in two other languages besides English... | |

| Ever since I was 5 my grandfather came to our house every Sunday to teach my younger brother and I piano. He was pretty strict, slapping our hands when we make mistakes. I didn't like music very much then, but liked the distinction of being able to play the piano among my classmates.
Later when I was 11, my mom found a violin teacher for us and I finally learned to love music, playing Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. I continued studying piano with my mother teaching since my grandfather can't come anymore because of arthritis and things like that. At high school, I dreamed of going to college in a conservatory for music, if not for the joy then to continue my grandfather's musical lineage. Alas, the universe had other ideas.
Thoroughly crushed, I failed the entrance exam for the College of Music in the university I got in four times. Grampa died May 7, 2007, none of his grandchildren becoming a true musician at the time he passed on. I lived a year and a half of gloominess and despair, shifting to BS Math instead.
There you have it, my broken wings. I'm such a loser...

| You still play for fun, right? (if you say no, I'll hunt you down and... give you a violin/piano)
Which college were you trying out for? If it was Julliard or Curtis, then it wouldn't have been much of a surprise.

| Goggles... do you play StarCraft too? I have reason to fear that you might be a Matt clone! lol. Sweetie, you're no loser. I can promise you that. You can say this much for yourself, at least you're in school and you know how to play. I'm sure that your grandfather was proud of you no matter what happened. | |

| He can't be a Matt-clone. I'm horrible at math, and I can't play the violin if my life depended on it. | |

| Unfortunately, I don't play either of the two instruments anymore. I haven't touched the piano for about a year now; when I play I feel so guilty not being able to live up to my family and friends' expectations.
I tried out for the College of Music here in the University of the Philippines, it's really a tough college to get into. Or maybe I'm just not good at it by the evaluator's response when I played. She said my skills needed a total overhaul. After studying the piano for eleven years and the violin for six, if that's not what you call a failure, I don't know what is.
I used to play Starcraft, but I don't see how it fits into this.

| Oh cool! You're from the Philippines?? Finally! Someone on my side of the world!!
Geez your evaluator sounds harsh. That doesn't make you a failure though! It was just one person's opinion!
The other two forum-boys here are like Starcraft Addicts! (Maybe Benign more so, but still.)

| Um, you're from Singapore, right?
From what I see in the rants section, Benign is one passionate guy for Starcraft.
Although it was the official evaluator who talked to me, I was actually watched by a panel of teachers from the college. I assume they agree on what she told me.
