| I second that. After a day of making my brain move at a pace faster than "glacial", it's so nice just to sit down and laugh at someone. | |

| Ha, I remember hearing something like that once! (Could've been something completely different, actually, but oh well. Lol all the same!)
Anyway, a guy came up to me on the bus, and said, "Excuse me, I didn't catch your name." "Um, who are you?" And he just smiles and says, "Aw, come on, don't you remember me, we go way back." So I look him up and down, he's a man who looks to be in his late twenties, maybe thirties. Who knows? I was never very good with ages. He's dressed shabbily and has even features but they're placed in a way that makes his whole face look a bit funny. I'm pretty sure I've never seen him before. "Um, no, we don't." He seems unfazed by this, instead he tells me, "Oh, here's my stop, I'll see you around, Marie."
Um... WTF? (I'll just note that Marie is a really common name around where I live.)
Oh, wait, this reminds me of another public transport WTF moment, an old one. I was in England (Yay! <3) on the train. This guy sits down next to me, and he's obviously had a beer or two, but isn't really too drunk. He sinks into the seat exclaiming that it's great to sit down, and that he's been travelling for six hours. He then proceeds to make conversation with just about anyone he can, mostly the girls on the other side of the isle (baby-teens going home from a day's shopping.) He's successfully made them giggle and squee in pitches I thought couldn't be heard by human ears, but whatever. I was reading Emma by Jane Austen, and he turns to me and says, "I bet that's a really good book if you're ignoring me for it." "I'm not ignoring you." "Yeah, you are." "Uh, no I'm not," I tell him with a smile. "Oh, cool." He seems pleased, "What's your name then?" "Guess," I say, because I don't like giving my name out to strangers. His eyes widen, he looks like he's just realised mankind's purpose of being. "Oh my God, your name's Emma and you're reading Emma! That's seriously cool."
My face pretty much read "WTF, dude?" And I believe it to be 100% justified.

| Haha, aww. Poor Nina.
I've had people guess at my name as Ashley, Annabelle [in Québec] Sasha, Juliet, and Lisa. Is Jasmine too Exotic for me?!

| Names...
A serious wtf for me is that generally people who don't know me assume I have an ethnic name and ASSUME that I speak my six-generations-back language.
I've been called Maria, Lupe, Anna, Dulce, Diana (which yes is close and I will answer too but that's not my name and it bugs me when people stress it and it becomes DEEYANNA), and a colorful array of many other Mexican/Spanish based names.
And where I live, most of the population thinks we live in Mexico or something because everyone thinks that it's WRONG if you don't know Spanish. Everytime I hear someone say, "You're Mexican and you don't speak Spanish!" I'm overcome with the urge to hit them and say, "I'm sorry, it's hard to learn asshole. You're quite fluent, maybe one day you could teach me!"
So yeah, aside from people who can't dress themselves even when the light is on, my biggest WTF is people assuming I'm an active Mexican and calling me Diana!

| LOL! I had my fair share of nicknames too, but that sucks! Oh, to add on to Nina's public transport WTFs! Just last night I was on the bus with my friend and we were wondering if this particular person was a male or female. (We really couldn't tell. And she wasn't even the good-looking androgynous sort.) Suddenly a friend of said person came on the bus and he greeted her really happily... and got a frosty, angry "I waited xxx hours for you" in return. They proceeded to have a rather fierce argument and we found out she was female. He was giving lame excuses and she was harping on the same issue over and over again. The embarrassment was written all over his face... it was hilarious XD | |

| @Ninaaa, It's not exotic in Canada, I know a few Jasmines, mostly of Arabian/Spanish descent, but I'm French/British Canadian, so they think I have either a French/English name, so Jasmine is their last choice. && I was called Clarisse yesterday. ...I like Annabelle better. It's pretty. I still love Jasmine, but everyone thinks I was named after Aladdin cause I was born in 1993 and my mom went into labour the day after seeing it. I was named after the flower. And it's Persian, meaning Princess of God. All hail the Princess. | |

| That's pretty cool And, Diane, I get what you mean about mistaken nationalities. The other day a waitress asked me if I was German. "No, I'm English, they are though," I replied pointed at my German cousin and his girlfriend, that I was eating with. She also brought me absinthe when I'd asked for a cider. Uh, you really don't want to be mixing those up, you know, missy. | |

| Drink mix fail :/
As for names... Why don't people just ask for your name instead of trying to guess it? :/

| Because people are stupid. I've learned that in fifteen short years.
I hate it when people screw up my name, too. I usually get called "Katerina" or "Kuh-try-nuh" because apparently Katrina is too hard to spell. Or else people call me Beth, Eileen, Anastasia, Nancy... (Yes, I've been called all these names.) I'm so pale white Italian girl, there's not really many interesting names I get called.
A friend of mine travels a lot. When she was in Germany a few years ago, her brother (then fourteen) asked for a coffee in a restraunt. The waitress told him he was too young for coffee, but she would gladly get him a beer. I don't know enough about Germany's drinking laws, but... wow. Just wow.

| That's crazy, you can get drunk but please don't get hyper?
On the subject of names. I get really annoyed when people misspell mine. Especially on things like facebook, where my name is very much visible. Oh, and at college and in shops if people don't know my actual name, I often get called Hoop Girl. Which I guess is understandable, considering I'm usually carrying a 40" hoop or some variety. But it gets kinda creepy when your just sitting quietly in the smoking hut with your cigarette and random guys come up to you with the line "Hey, I know you, you're HOOP GIRL!". It's irritating, because I can never tell if they're mocking me or not...

| I don't understand it either... *sighs*
Similar stuff happens to me. At the beginning of band, everyone just called me "bari sax girl" because none of them actually knew my name. Not even my section leaders.
What I really hate is when people call me Katie. My friends don't usually call me by Katrina (they all call me Kat or Rina or whatever) but seriously. A bunch of them, I've just learned, have been laboring under the delusion that my name is KATIE. (And I call them my friends...)
