It's kind of interesting they say vegetarians are skinner than meat-eaters since most people who become vegetarians gain weight because they eat a lot of snacks and other non-meat foods to substitue the meat.

But the sign is offensive to me.

Who are they to comment about people's weight?

I laughed. Loudly. My apologies.
I find the intended pun lame, but the fact that it was offensive made me laugh. (I'd like to note that I am a little ashamed that offensive material makes me laugh.)

And Goggles, I heard some kids in Japan (I think) eat whale for school lunches.

I found it offensive. But PETA typically has no tact, so I'm not surprised.

But those veggie-eaters who are 'leaner' are also typically more prone to malnutrition, as well.

*laughs to himself*

They claim that being a veggie-eater makes you lose weight. Thus, being vegetarian reduces the number of "whales" like me on earth.

If you didn't find it funny it's okay. You're just not geeky enough.

Ok, I get it now (I got it in the first place, but the pun was so pathetic I thought I must be missing something). And I do have something to say...

And bear in mind I don't really mean to offend anyone...
But I'd just like to pick up on one thing...

xReadItAndWeepx wrote:

I mean no offense Caitlin, but since when have you needed to be someone important to comment on people's weight? It happens all the time- from the "fat idiot" driving like a madman to the "skinny bitch" holding up the queue because she wants her sandwich made me low-fat-no-carb-something something. And quite frankly, why should anyone be offended by comments on their weight?

...There was probably a better way to put that.

Sorry, all this talk of vegetarianism is starting to get to me.

Actually, I feel that it depends on how the comment is made. I think a person has every right to be pissed if someone makes a rude and unneccessary comment in their face (or even behind their back); something like, "You're fat and ugly, go and die." But for those general comments that we've gotten so used to making, like the ones Aana listed... as long as they're out of earshot, I think those are fine.

I found the article amusing because honestly, it wasn't targeted specifically at anybody and meant purely for a joke, imo. Comparing people at the beach to beached whales is a bit of an old joke actually. It's not the first time I've read something like that! Smile

It was meant as a joke?

Oh...I thought it was serious. I wasn't paying attention.

I took it as a joke. Do you mean to say that there're really billboards like those out there?! Omg, I want to see them!!

Either way, I wouldn't read too much into it.

Heh, I just got called "skinny bitch" the other day.

I agree with Potgenie that it can depend on how a comment is made. I never much appreciated being called a "disgusting sack of bones" whilst suffering from an eating disorder (No worries though, I'm a healthy weight and it's all in the past now. I even have some of my own tummy-blubber!)
And, again, it's not like the article was done with pure hatred or anyhting.

For the record I think it is awful for people to be overweight, but I would never bother them about it. If that's how they want to live their life, then I believe I'd best stay out of it and accept it.
(Though it doesn't make them immne to a passing bitchy comment. I'm only human, and a bitchy one at that.)
The same goes for smoking and the likes.

Oh, and I take almost everything as a joke in life anyway (I tell you whether or not it turns out to be a bad thing, lol)

o_o
Didn't think it would get this heated...

I just find it offensive because I'm a vegetarian who gained weight. And I live in a family where I'm the smallest and I'm a size 14 at best.

Erm, I didn't mean to contribute to the "heat" as it were Embarassed

I'm assuming that's an American size 14 (or Canadian, you guys could have another different size system for all I know!) and therefore have no idea at all of what size that is. confused

Ironically, this article did manage to correct my wrong belief that going vegan is a sure-fire way of slimming down. So that's a good thing, huh? Razz

That is one good thing, especially as it concerns you health.
The second good thing would be that I finally looked up a clothing size converter thingy, so know know my American size, whoop-de-doo!

No really, no I can be properly scared at how small a size 0 is pale

How small is a size 0?

One size bigger than a 00... and that's about as small as it gets.

00? *shudder*

I found in one place that size 0 is a UK size 2, though I'd never have thought that size existed. Another site I found said that a size 0 is a UK size 4, but that seriously can't be right. If it is, then I'm closer than I thought, which would be effing scary. pale

EDIT:
Because I'm probably a masochist or something at heart, I did an image search for "size zero."

.... AAARRRGH!! My eyes! It buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurns!!! So horrible! So unsexy!

And their heads are way to big for their bodies. Now that, at least, I find hilarious.
