PostSubject: Character Names: Japanese meanings   Sat Feb 28, 2009 11:54 pm

I was searching names for a novel I'm starting to write and I found Taichi. Fun ensues.

TAICHI
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Japanese
Other Scripts: 太一 (Japanese)
From Japanese 太 (ta) "thick, big" and 一 (ichi) "one".

YAMATO
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Japanese
Other Scripts: 大和 (Japanese)
Refers to the ancient Yamato period in Japanese history, which lasted into the 8th century. The individual kanji are 大 "large, great" and 和 "harmony".

SORA
Gender: Feminine & Masculine
Usage: Japanese
Other Scripts: 空, 昊 (Japanese)
From Japanese 空 or 昊 which both mean "sky".

HIKARI
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Japanese
Other Scripts: 光 (Japanese)
Means "light" in Japanese. It is often written ひかり using the hiragana writing system.

MIYAKO
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Japanese
Other Scripts: 美夜子 (Japanese)
From Japanese 美 (mi) "beautiful", 夜 (ya) "night" and 子 (ko) "child".

DAISUKE
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Japanese
Other Scripts: 大輔 (Japanese)
From Japanese 大 (dai) "large, great" and 輔 (suke) "help".

KEN (2)
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Japanese
Other Scripts: 健 (Japanese)
Means "healthy, strong" in Japanese.

[NOTE: Jyou, Koushiro, Mimi, Takeru, and Iori were not found in the context needed. Please update if you find any of those.]

Retrieved from Megchan's Digimon Sekai

Jyou's last name, Kido, means "Castle Door," Jyou, means "Stature."

Taichi's last name, Yagami, means "Eight Gods," and his first name is a popular boys name written with the character "Thick" and the number "One."

Sora's last name, Takenouchi, means "Home of the Warrior," and her first name, Sora, means "Sky."

Yamato's last name, "Ishida," means "Rock Rice Paddy." Although his first name is written in katakana and not kanji, there is only one meaning for Yamato. It is the ancient name of Japan and is a very patriotic name for boys.

Koushiro's last name, Izumi, means "A Spring," and his first name means "Light Child."

Mimi's last name, Tachikawa, means "Big Sword River." Her first name is written in katakana, not kanji, so there is no way to know for sure what her name means, but the name Mimi is often written with the characters for "Beauty" and "Truth."

Takeru's last name, Takaishi, means "Tall Rock." Takeru means "mountain."

Hikari's last name, Yagami, means "Eight Gods." Although her first name is written in katakana and not in kanji, there is only one meaning for Hikari, "Light."

The characters for Miyako's last name, Inoue, mean "Above the Well" and her first name means "Capitol."

The characters for Daisuke's last name, Motomiya, mean "True Shrine" and his first name means "Big Help."

The characters for Iori's last name, Hida, mean "Fire Rice Paddy" and his first name means "Cloth."

The characters for Ken's last name, Ichijouji, mean "First Temple" and his first name means "Intelligent."

This makes sense; quite a few of those characters are also Chinese and they have the same meaning in Chinese the Japanese meanings you posted... interesting info! =)

Oh an additional note, I learnt about the legendary Samurai warrior Yamato Takeru in one my modules last semester. He's a pretty revered character in Japan, so perhaps the people from Toei got their inspiration from this guy!

I read, courtesy of Japanese Baby Names and Wikipedia, that the name Takeru means "warrior." So I guess it all depends on who you ask.

So apparently it's come to my attention that my little dig through the internet time machine in order to find the meanings for the Chosen's names for you guys got copy/pasted elsewhere without linking back to this thread and without citing who collected all the info.

Awesome.

At least Megchan's Digimon Sekai got mentioned. Oh wait, that was part of the copy/paste, too. It's unfortunate the link I embedded with the website title couldn't be transferred along that way as well.

If you hold the other forum in contempt, raise your hand and say "BUGGERATION!"

Just because someone pointed out something REALLY annoying today to do with it.

Sorry for being so vague.
